Why is Locally Raised Turkey More Expensive?
Raising turkeys the way we do at Dogtown Acres takes more time, more space, and a lot more hands-on care than conventional production. Every extra hour and love shows up in the final price — but it also shows up on your plate.
Conventional turkeys are typically raised indoors by the thousands, with automated feeding, watering, and climate systems. That model spreads costs over a huge number of birds and often relies on cheap feed and aggressive growth strategies to keep prices low.
On a small local farm, each turkey poult (baby turkey) is significantly more expensive, and we don’t receive bulk discounts like large integrators. We invest in higher-quality, non-GMO feed and give our birds room to roam on land, which means fewer birds per acre and a longer grow-out time.
Instead of pushing birds to grow as fast as possible or injecting them with growth hormones, we let them develop at a natural pace over many weeks. That slower, more attentive approach increases our costs — but it also improves animal welfare, flavor, and nutrition.
“The price reflects the true cost of raising an animal with care. It’s not a markup — it’s an honest reflection of what it actually takes to do this right.”
The Better Choice
🥗 Better for Your Health
locally raised turkeys have access to sunshine, fresh air, and diverse forage, which supports healthier birds and more nutrient-dense meat. You avoid the routine antibiotics, confinement stress, and additives that often come with industrial poultry.
🌿 Better for the Bird
Locally raised turkeys aren’t packed by the thousands into windowless houses. They have room to move, scratch, and express natural behaviors, which leads to calmer, healthier animals and a more humane life from start to finish.
🍗 Better Taste
Slow-grown, well-fed birds simply taste better. A locally raised turkey develops deeper flavor and better texture without injections, brines, or fillers — just real turkey that shines on your holiday table.
“When you buy a turkey from Dogtown Acres, you’re not just buying meat. You’re supporting a family farm, a better food system, and an animal that was raised with respect.”
